Stilettos at Sixty

Sep 5, 2011 by

For many, turning sixty means crossing something lofty off their bucket list.  Maybe they attempt an athletic achievement, or take a vacation at a far-flung destination, or revisit their childhood neighborhood. I did none of that on my birthday. First, I don’t have a bucket list. It would just depress me. But besides that, I did something much more pedestrian for my sixtieth – I decided to start wearing high heels. When I turned 35, I became an enthusiast of Erno Lazlo products, spending my mornings and evenings religiously splash, splash, splashing to protect my skin. At 45, I invested in a personal trainer, committed to having a better body than I had at 35.That program unfortunately ended with a ruptured disc and a week flat on my back. For my 50th, I forgot...

Retail Therapy Works .. Research Confirms!...

Jul 25, 2011 by

Shopping as “therapy” is effective at elevating mood, and it doesn’t lead to buyer’s regret. All of the shoppers in a research sample said they had bought themselves a treat during the past week—ranging from a fishing reel to a kitchen magnet—and 62% of the treat purchases were motivated by a desire to repair a bad mood, say A. Selin Atalay of HEC Paris in France and Margaret G. Meloy of Penn State. Asked about their post-purchase feelings, 82% of participants had only positive things to say. There seem to be few, if any, downside consequences of retail therapy, the researchers say. Source: Retail Therapy: A Strategic Effort to Improve Mood I KNEW IT!  Ever wonder why our society feels compelled to spend a fortune in time and research expense to prove what every...

Flea Markets Are Like Dating, or Maybe Not...

Apr 14, 2011 by

I enjoy flea markets. I love fleaing.  Ur, no, no – not fleeing. We’re not talking about dating when you’re 50+ today.  Or, maybe we are.  The quality rankings of fleaing could apply to dating.  But then we humans can make pretty much anything (Hey! Quantum physics!) apply to our mating rituals.  But I digress.  ANYHOO… I can spend hours and hours marveling that someone somewhere actually bought the turquoise/burnt orange/rusted/broken gizmoy thingie in the first place.  What the hell is it anyway; good lord is that really three zeros on the price tag!? WHAT is the dealer smoking? Now, that I’d buy – must be really good shit, man. For those of you who may be new to the fine art of fleaing, here are some basics: Fundamental law that applies to all...

How to Grocery Shop Economically and Well – Part 2...

Feb 24, 2011 by

Go semi vegetarian or just cut way down on meat. I don’t care how great that butcher department sale is, Scarlett, it can’t compete with the price of beans or tofu or making a frittata. A wide assortment of nuts is available and they have become more competitively priced in relation to other groceries. Get worldly. Ethnic markets can have some of the best options for fresh and affordable, not to mention delectable. Some of the items I stock up on in ethnic markets or grocery sections are spices, noodles, seaweed, tostadas, tortillas, sauces, canned beans and the list goes on. At a fraction of the usual grocery price, and often better tasting. The last time I visited the Buford Asian Market they were out of my favorite Pad Thai Sauce that is sold...

Skinny Little Dress

Feb 14, 2011 by

Shopping for clothes is not what it used to be. It seemed so much easier when I was in my 20’s and 30’s and had a body that could wear just about anything and look fabulous. I never had a weight issue until my late 40’s when changing hormones began wreaking havoc with my formerly maintenance-free body. A single dessert now seemed to be able to add five pounds to my frame overnight. This is what has made clothes shopping less appealing to me in recent years. I’m in that in-between stage of not resonating to most “women’s” fashions (too “matronly”) and not being able to fit into alot of the trendier clothes that are geared for younger Girlfriends. And if I did manage to find something I loved, I’d get in the dressing...
