The Conversation Is Launched

Sep 20, 2012 by

The conversation has been launched ladies on re-defining the New Face Beauty! While this conversation has been in my mind over the last 20 years, I first started writing about it this past April in response to Ashley Judd’s outcry against the media for their gross representation of her weight and looks. It was my first commentary against the media for their portrayal of what beauty is and should be based on their reporting, reality TV, and the movie industry in general. Since then I’ve written 2 more posts on what we can do about it, and the fashion industries part in this conversation.  I suspect there are many more in the works. Why is this an important subject for me personally as well as socially? Growing up I lived in a household with 4 women...

Beauty is a Sense of Freedom

Sep 5, 2012 by

It was a warm, wonderful summer day. We’d all piled into the car, my step-mother, my Dad, my two sisters and myself, and were taking a leisurely drive to the lake. I say leisurely because that’s how I remember it. It could have been hurried and frantic, for all I know. In memory, I savor the warmth of the sun pouring in those fully rolled down windows of the car (no, I have no idea what kind of car; to this day, my relationship to cars is to answer the, “What kind of car do you drive?” question with, “A gold one.”), and the chatter of the family talking about what we’d do once we arrived at the lake. The lake was a frequent destination. Dad likes boating and while our boat was nothing...

Beauty is as Beauty Does

Aug 13, 2012 by

That’s what my mother used to tell me, back in the ancient days of my youth. I’d be all dressed up for a special occasion, preening in front of the mirror, and she’d come up behind me and give me a small smile, then fling that dinger at me. “Beauty is as beauty does.” Since I never considered myself beautiful, I was clueless. What did she mean?  I seldom pondered the answer to my own question. I had places to go. I know what she meant, now. I know she was trying to tell me to behave; that my looks could get me in trouble. But, as a teenager, all I could think was – “Do I look all right? Is my eyeliner straight? Is my blouse tight enough?” Yes, I was fortunate to...

Interview With Author Terry Tempest Williams...

Jun 6, 2012 by

15 May 2012  Tabard Inn Washington, D.C.  Dearest Bonnie:  Greetings.  Here are my responses to your evocative questions.  Many thanks, Terry atsGf/Bonnie Simon: Terry, I love your poetic style of writing.  What influences helped you develop it? Terry Tempest Williams:  I think style is like voice, it grows organically from the truth of one’s own life experience.  I don’t think in terms of chapters, per se.  I think in terms of stories.  It is the story itself that creates an inherent structure.  With this book, “When Women Were Birds,” it is a story about how my mother left me her journals andall her journals were blank.  There are twelve blank pages that follow this revelation in the book.  That is not a style, but the physical truth.  I wanted the reader to feel that same...

When Women Were Birds by Terry Tempest Williams...

May 29, 2012 by

What does it mean to live past the age at which a loved one died? We are guided and shaped by the important people in our lives, both by their lives and by the confusion of losing them.  In two years I will be 45, the age at which my late husband, the most profound influence on my adult life, passed on.  Even now I wonder what it will mean to live past the age he attained.  How do we grow beyond what our mentors could offer? I am not the only one to note the significance of an age. “I am fifty-four years old, the age my mother was when she died” begins Terry Tempest Williams in her new book, When Women Were Birds. Her mother had pointedly bequeathed her two shelves of...

And Now A Word From The Fashion Police …...

Apr 2, 2012 by

Spring has come early to Boston! Actually it was more like summer last week with temperatures above 80. With this gift from Mother Nature came the flip side of a warm day…fashion faux pas everywhere I looked. I am by no means a style expert, some of my favorite outfits are too old to even admit! No one has ever mistaken me for a fashion expert BUT some things must obviously be pointed out because it seems many people this week went out without the benefit of common sense…or a mirror! For  Girlfriends … Just because the belly shirt is your size doesn’t mean everyone should wear one. If your belly sticks out further than your breasts…cover it up! If your belly covers your waistband when you stand up( or for that matter if you’re seated)...

OM is in hOMe

One of the things I find missing in our fast pace lives is an inclusion of Spirit in the everyday. Now I’m not talking religion, but rather a sense of the mystical, the magical and the very breath of life. For me, one of the easiest ways to be with spirit is through a little bit of beauty. Beauty is one of those intangible elements that speaks to our spirit, uplifts our soul and makes us feel good.  When we are surrounded by beauty it is generally difficult to be negative or depressed. Yes, beauty matters! It almost always makes us want to stop, and breathe it in. Natural beauty is filled with grace and style.  And, I believe it should be an intrinsic part of every space, whether our home or workspace. What are some...

Why Milliennials Won’t Get A Cold War...

Jan 18, 2012 by

Recently over a long holiday weekend, I had the opportunity to see Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy the movie, an adaptation of the now famous John Le Carré (nom de plume of David John Moore Cornwell) novel – part of a series that focuses on character George Smiley. Gary Oldham is in an Oscar-worthy role as George Smiley and is the number 2 in command to Control, played brilliantly by John Hurt.  While I strongly recommend this very character-driven movie, I realize that it is not for everyone. Especially if you are into blow-em-up Hollywood blockbusters – this one is meant for those bookish types who prefer politics and intrigue to titillation and special effects. That said, my friend Michael Fuller, an old-school chap from London, escorted me. He chortled that I was a mere babe...

Yes, Virginia, There is Skiing In Indiana...

Jan 16, 2012 by

2011 was the year of going back to basics for me. I went back to tap dancing, back to tech marketing and back to downhill skiing. I gave up downhill skiing 16 years ago when I got married. My husband didn’t ski so I took up spectator college basketball – college basketball is one of his passions as he got a full-ride scholarship to play college basketball and later, he became a radio sportscaster doing play-by-play college basketball – he didn’t ask me to give it up but I wanted us to be able to do something together. Of course, that was early in our marriage. I was just a kid then. Ha Ha. A few months ago, I decided I missed skiing too much and decided I wanted to get back into it....

Separate but not Sequel

Jan 9, 2012 by

Have you ever had high hopes or expectations when you entered into something? A new job, a second date, or that perfect black dress that arrived mail-order. You know what I am referring to. Recently my dear friend Mary and her husband Craig, invited me to see the re-make of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. David Fincher’s initial version to the Stieg Larsson’s Millennium  trilogy made famous by Noomi Rapacei. Larsson witnessed the gang rape of a young girl when he was 15. He never forgave himself for failing to help the girl, whose name was Lisbeth – like the young main character of his books, herself a rape victim, which inspired the theme of sexual violence against women in his books. Maybe I should not have read the books, or seen the original trilogy in Swedish – by...

Dancing With The Stars ~ Mystery Music Week...

Nov 13, 2011 by

We’re getting close to the end of this season. This week on Dancing With The Stars the performers needed to do two dances. One of their own choosing, the other an “Instant Jive”. They all get time to practice the rudimentary steps of this dance; the gimmick is that the dancers have no idea what song they’ll be “jiving” to! If you’ve followed all my updates you’re either amused, interested or sick to death of me telling you about how much I want JR Martinez to win this contest! Obviously the judges are starting to agree with me. He did a wonderful waltz, lyrical and graceful-got a perfect 30. Then his jive rocked the ballroom- another 30!  He is a fabulous entertainer and the joy on his face as he performs is infectious. It’s...

Dancing With The Stars ~ Halloween...

Nov 5, 2011 by

Once again girlfriends, if you weren’t watching Dancing With The Stars you missed a strange week. We’re down to 6 pairs The dancers were all in Halloween themed costumes, but some of the music just didn’t match the outfit or the dance. As you can see, I’m now considering myself an expert My favorite JR Martinez did a great tango, his style is so smooth. Judges weren’t crazy about it-said it was his own fault; he has been doing so well that they expect more from him. Ricki Lake blathered on about a rib injury then did a very energetic Paso. I know, I know. She’s good…blahblahblah. Still don’t like her. Nancy Grace looked like something out of a Tim Burton version of Willy Wonka. I wish I could explain what she was supposed...
