I Love Lucy

Aug 17, 2011 by

Just nine months ago, I adopted a cute cockapoo. I named her Lucy.  I must admit though my husband was definitely reluctant. Excuses like “you’re never home” rang true, but the reality was I was home quite a bit, just not when he was home! What is interesting is that although couples may vehemently disagree on most topics, they usually both soften in manner and tone to agree that the dog, cat, bird or horse is great. What happens between people and their pets that accounts for this emotional outpouring of love? Funny, if there is any criticism, it is the verbalized wish to receive the kind of love and attention the pet is getting. “I only wish she was as affectionate with me as with our dog!” “You should hear him speak to...

Vegetarian Chili

May 20, 2011 by

OK. I confess. I’m not single, I’m a carnivore, and my husband is always trying to convert me to veganism, or at least give it a Girl Scout try.  I’m the classic Irish Potato head, and if I had my way I’d be eating hamburgers and corn beef hash behind his back. So, being married is definitely not all it’s cracked up to be girls.  If you’re Catholic and married or Jewish and married, there’s a ton of guilt that could even result in your confessing, “Oh, I feel so guilty that I ate that”. It may be only slightly exaggerating to say that I feel guilty that I’m not a more “healthy” eater because I talk about health all the time and shine the light on others who actually…are the ones I wish...

My Creative Inspiration

May 8, 2011 by

My mother was a school nurse for many years in our town’s elementary school system.  She has accomplished so much in her life, but she would not agree as she is very self-effacing! My mom has tended to making all of the dozens of homes she and my dad have owned into beautiful spaces that bring together our large and extended family, including 7 nieces and nephews. From beach houses to city dwellings, it’s all about everyone else. She is a lot of fun too, and despite being diagnosed with breast cancer late last year, she rides her bike with my dad up to 30 miles a day several days a week. I can’t think of any other word to describe my lovely mother, other than an inspiration! The picture of my mom is...

International Women’s Day: A Bridge of Solidarity...

Mar 8, 2011 by

“Women are the best index of the coming hour” – Ralph Waldo Emerson This year is a special year for women around the world as we celebrate the 100th International Women’s Day, now recognized as a global mainstream phenomena and celebrated as an official holiday in approximately 25 countries including Afghanistan, Russia, Ukraine, Vietnam and Zambia. As a women’s health advocate, marketer and communicator, I’m thrilled to see the bridge as a metaphor used to rally women and men at a time when we American women have a great role to play in bridging to a better future for our daughters.  We also have a great opportunity to build solidarity with and among women all over the world. Women in the US, for the most part, are a privileged community. Compared to women worldwide, the education...

Cosmetic Surgery .. You, Only Better...

Feb 23, 2011 by

It’s all about light reflection – not lines and wrinkles so..whatever you do… keep smiling to keep your natural good looks! Did you know that there are new “non-invasive” dermatology techniques that fill areas where there is less light reflection – which is a measure of “youth” according to Erin Myers-Albaridi, Physician’s Assistant, Connecticut Dermatology Group.  Erin says it’s not really about the lines it’s about filling in to restore the facial contours that allow us to achieve a seamless transition from one area of the face to the other. So, goodbye “nip and tuck”..hello facial rejuvenation.  At least for the kinds of “work” that helps us keep our natural good looks as we age and save for retirement. In other words, it’s not the nip and tuck that we know is going to...

Row Row Row Your Boat .. To A Healthier You...

Feb 10, 2011 by

My 5 foot ten inch frame has always seemed more naturally built for basketball, yoga or cross country running but I found a sport 30 years after those dreadful high school phys ed classes that is absolutely perfect for me at this point in  my life. Ladies…I am keeping my day job but  the sport of  rowing  is one which has grabbed me by surprise and has triggered a new view on “health”. I made a decision that it was “time”  to reinvent my life, including health, so I could sustain both weight management and fun!  In essence, I had to re-program how I saw health fitting into my life. Was it just the desire to loose weight and get in my “skinny jeans”?  Not really, but that was a start. Approaching 50 years...
