Susyn And The City

Nov 30, 2011 by

Ok, so I’m not Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda or Samantha, but I did have a blast in New York City earlier this month. I was in town to film a web series in New York City. It’s a fun web series called Which Way, whose logline is described as a cross between Fame and Saved By The Bell. I play the mother of the lead character. The role is ongoing so I will be back to Gotham to film more soon. I will let you all know when the web series is available for viewing. I thought it would be fun to do a trip diary. November 2-4. I flew into LaGuardia on November 2. After a rehearsal on November 3, I was ready to get to set. On Friday, November 4, I arrived on...

Plan B: Turning this-isn’t-working into that-could-work...

Nov 28, 2011 by

Who hasn’t surrendered to the reality that the original strategy, tactic, and/or educational investment wasn’t panning out?  With such a volatile economy disrupted by technology, we’re all finding ourselves stumbling or even stuck.  Yet, it’s been tough to admit that, yet again, Plan A didn’t work.  We feel foolish.  Our confidence is shaken to the core.  And we just want to relocate to an emerging economy like Nigeria which is growing at about eight percent.  Could be that we will have more luck there. Serial entrepreneur David Murray sucks out the drama from failure.  His book “Plan B” chronicles how few plans yield any results.  And that’s it’s primarily through constant course correction, sometimes radical, that we can finally hit some home runs. Murray presents the riveting example of why Facebook is going gangbusters and MySpace...

Almond Bars

Nov 25, 2011 by

Almond bars were a big seller for Chickens in the Kitchen this past summer.  This recipe is an adaptation of an Elana’s Pantry recipe.  Her book, The Gluten Free Almond Flour Cookbook, includes a delicious recipe for almond flour chocolate chip cookies. I learned, by experimenting, that you can make lovely almond flour cookies in a home oven, but a commercial convection oven will turn the batter into one very thin layer of cookie on the baking sheet!  Why?  The heat rises too fast and the batter melts.  Making bars solved that problem. Another change involved the almonds.  I don’t own a food processor and chop my almonds in the blender, resulting in a very coarse grind.  If I blend too long, I get almond butter and then I get distracted by lunch. The...

The Thanksgiving List

Nov 24, 2011 by

The Thanksgiving List …and don’t forget the real whipping cream for the pie…;) Thanksgiving is my very favorite holiday, and not only because of the turkey and cranberry sandwiches at midnight.  Properly observed, the holiday is all about friends, family and being grateful for all you’ve had and have. Every year I sit down and make a list. Some years it’s longer than others, but it could still go on for pages. It’s amazing how much I have, even when the bank account could be larger and my hips smaller. (Hmmm…maybe I should cut back on that whipping cream…) Here are the top three from my grateful list this year: I’m grateful for the perspective of age. My heart’s been broken more than once. Loved ones die.  And, I don’t believe you ever “get...

Thanks Mom

Nov 24, 2011 by

Thanksgiving has been a take it or leave it holiday for me. When my dad was alive, my mother would make a huge Thanksgiving Day feast – she made the best stuffing with oysters. It was very good. (I could never duplicate that recipe even though I credit my mother with my skills as a good cook and my perfection with making a bed with hospital corners and a tidy house). After my father passed away and my mother came to live with my husband and me, our tradition was going out to eat at usually a fancy place (that was my indulgence considering I cooked for Christmas – I LOVE to cook and bake for Christmas  – you should see the spread I usually put out). Even though my husband and I ventured...

Grief is the Price We Pay for Love...

Nov 24, 2011 by

This post is dedicated to Nancy and her son. “You are all done,” she said. “You may be a bit pink in the morning, but for this type of facial it is completely normal. Your husband will think he is with a Twenty-something by Thanksgiving. You have great skin!” she exclaimed. And then I shared that there was no husband. I am a widow and have been since 1999. I went onto explain that since then Thanksgiving has always been a very lonely holiday. I have no family now and I always feel like I am intruding on someone else when Thanksgiving comes around. When friends invite me, I feel more like an interloper than an invited guest. I know I shouldn’t but I do. And then when the questions begin about where my...

A New Journey

Nov 23, 2011 by

1 Step Thanksgiving, what to post for Thanksgiving?  It’s a holiday that I have a love/hate relationship with.  You see, I love to eat.  I love all the wonderful food prepared for the traditional feast.  Root veggies, roasted to perfection, homemade breads and pies, all sorts of yummy treats to delight the pallet.  I love to cook and share what I prepare with friends and family.  But I’m now in what they call the morbidly obese category.  Thanksgiving is coming and I’m in the process of preparing for a major life change, bariatric surgery.  This scares the b-Jesus out of me. They say each journey begins with just one step.  With some trepidation I’m going to take the step to gain back my life through bariatric surgery.  It has taken me years to reach...

Thanksgiving Traditions Differ

Nov 23, 2011 by

Thanksgiving means different things to each of us. For some girlfriends it’s a special dish that brings back childhood memories. For others it’s the people sitting around the table. All The Single Girlfriend authors share What makes Thanksgiving “Thanksgiving” for us. For some Gf the holiday is a melancholy time. For some it’s a time of new beginnings. Over the next days we’ll share our experiences and memories with you. Please join the conversation and let us know what are some of your Thanksgiving traditions. Thanksgiving means being with the people I love, eating whatever version of the foods I love show up. I am not a stickler for how it used to be but I honor the past while creating traditions that start in the present.  This year: cutting the turkey up first before...

The Dead Celebrity Cookbook – Dead but Not Gone: Recipes to die for…...

Nov 18, 2011 by

It’s hard to avoid punning when describing the new Dead Celebrity Cookbook – A Resurrection of Recipes from More than 145 Stars of Stage and Screen by Frank DeCaro. DeCaro is a celebrity in his own right: he was the flamboyant movie critic on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and now hosts his own weekday morning national call-in program “The Frank DeCaro Show” on Sirius XM Satellite Radio. He wrote the memoir A Boy Named Phyllis and wrote the “Style Over Substance” column for the New York Times. DeCaro indulges in plenty of tongue-in-cheek comments, but despite the playful tone of the book, he is serious student of pop culture and truly loves the guys and gals whose recipes he has rounded up. “I’ve been interested in celebrities dead and alive for a...

Dancing With The Stars ~ Mystery Music Week...

Nov 13, 2011 by

We’re getting close to the end of this season. This week on Dancing With The Stars the performers needed to do two dances. One of their own choosing, the other an “Instant Jive”. They all get time to practice the rudimentary steps of this dance; the gimmick is that the dancers have no idea what song they’ll be “jiving” to! If you’ve followed all my updates you’re either amused, interested or sick to death of me telling you about how much I want JR Martinez to win this contest! Obviously the judges are starting to agree with me. He did a wonderful waltz, lyrical and graceful-got a perfect 30. Then his jive rocked the ballroom- another 30!  He is a fabulous entertainer and the joy on his face as he performs is infectious. It’s...

Grandmother Frederiksen’s Indian Corn Pudding...

Nov 11, 2011 by

If you’ve been reading my recipes you probably guess that I am big on holiday traditions. Many years ago, shortly after my divorce, a good friend invited my two young daughters and me to spend Thanksgiving with her extended family. Knowing my preference for pies she asked me to bring basic apple and pumpkin specimens to the feast.  I agreed, but warned her I would bring my corn pudding as well. Thanksgiving simply isn’t Thanksgiving without Grandmother’s corn pudding. My friend was clearly skeptical, but polite. Thanksgiving day we showed up with boxes of steaming pies and two casseroles of corn pudding.  Still skeptical she smiled graciously as she put the first one on the buffet.  I watched quietly as her family members, with exquisite manners, each took a small bite of my corn...
