Summer Farmers’ Markets: A Family Affair...

Behind the card table sits Miss Betty. Standing proudly next to her are two young boys with their buzz cuts summer short.  “No dear,” she patiently and proudly  explains  to me when I asked if the boys were her grandsons. “They are my great grandsons.” Jars upon jars of fresh jams and preserves, from her own fruit trees and bushes, stand before her. They are preciously lined up like little toy soldiers.  Next to the rows of figs, peaches, blueberries and pears are more mason jars. These are  filled with a variety of interesting pickles made from veggies fresh from  Miss Betty’s garden .. tomatoes infused with cinnamon, spicy cucumbers and of course, southern choux choux (mixed veggies). Girlfriends Helping Girlfriends is an ongoing series that shines a virtual spotlight on girlfriends who have been helping girls and women. Ellen Dorsch and I go back more than 50 years.  We were high school friends, staying in touch via the ‘two degrees of separation’ principle:  mutual friends filling in the broad brushstrokes of each other’s lives for us.  We reignited our friendship at a mini 65th birthday reunion and again at our 50th high school reunion last fall. She invited me to visit her home in Vermont sometime and I took her up on it. (Fair warning: when you invite a newly retired person to ‘visit sometime,’ there is a good chance they will do it.) The “Thing Thing” (Clean your cabinets!)...

I recently moved my mom, aka “The Momster” to Albuquerque.  As such things go, I couldn’t move most of her material possessions. Too much stuff. Too little time.  Too many and higher priorities. And, as I spent hours digging through drawers, closets and cabinets…much of it appeared to not have been touched, much less used in years, if not decades. ALL of it coated in multiple layers of deep, deep brown nicotine (Hey, wasn’t this white when I sent it as an Xmas present? Ack. Ack.)  So, what the hell to move??? –  especially given Mom’s directive to “do the best you can.” Still, I tried…digging out old family jewelry…sifting through piles of paper… trying to get the things that would really (I thought) mean something to the Momster.  All while breathing in decades...
