The Soulful Sound and Story of Art...

Jul 20, 2011 by

From the ancient days of cave painting to the remarkable statues of Michelangelo all the way to our modern museums of art, the concept of art as a story of soul and sound is as old as rain and wind. My experiences with art are so limited, I feel handicapped even writing about it. Not that long ago, I thought of art as… a painting, a poem, a story, a design, a musical, a song; all things that are part of art – but which don’t really convey true artistic creativity, individually. I seldom connected the dots. For instance – a painting is only as good as the person viewing it believes it is good. The story, the soul, the sound of the painting is not the story, soul or sound of the painter....

Interview with Bella DePaulo, PhD...

Jul 11, 2011 by

Recently, I was playing following the link. You know how that goes .. you click on one link it takes you to another site and so on. If you’re lucky you land on some pretty cool sites. It must have been my lucky day because I came across a series of articles by Dr. Bella DePaulo on Psychology Today. The good doc is focusing on Living and Being Single. In addition to her posts she has written several books including Singled Out: How Singles Are Stereotyped, Stigmatized, and Ignored, and Still Live Happily Ever After. As Anne of Green Gables might put it, DePaulo is indeed a kindred spirit. Dr. DePaulo’s work validates the focus of All The Single Girlfriends down to our concept of “single in spirit.”  We thought she’d make a great guest...

Things I WOULDN’T Change About My Life – No Matter What!...

Jun 13, 2011 by

Last week I wrote a post about the things I would change in my life, if I could go back and be a kid again. Things like realizing I was ‘ok’ – maybe more than ‘ok’. I’d have studied more and read great literature in favor of…the stuff I was reading. I’d have realized that I truly did have my whole life ahead of me, when I was 15, and not lamented over the things I allowed to rule the day. Now, I’d like to talk about the things in my life that I would NOT change. There are a lot so I’ll just mention a few in this post. I wouldn’t change my family. We may be dysfunctional to the nth degree in many ways, but at our core we love each other....

Wouldn’t You Change Anything – Really?...

Jun 6, 2011 by

It always amuses me when folks answer the “If you could change anything about your past, what would it be?” with, “Nothing. If I changed anything, I wouldn’t be me.” Really? Nothing? Absolutely nothing has happened in your past that you would change, if you could go back and make changes? Well, I’d change a lot. And, I’d expect to be the exact same person I am today, only better; sooner. How does that work? Here’s how… When I was a child I was phenomenally shy and introverted. Never mind why. I just was. If I could go back and not be shy, I would. I’d like to engage with the neighborhood kids on a one-on-one level, and not be afraid of being left out because… no one liked me. I remember one instance...

Just Google Me?

May 4, 2011 by

I heard a really interesting report today on NPR’s Morning Addition.  Seems that Google has re-configured its search algorithm in an effort to further control how something appears in their search listing.  Here’s the link if you want to read the whole story: Google Search Tweaks Puts a Company at Risk. What that got me thinking was, what happens when I say, “Just Google me for my info.” Since I haven’t updated my website or kept up with my Linkedin, Twitter, MySpace, Facebook, pick your social site lately, will I no longer exist on Google.  And if I don’t exist on Google, do I exist?  If I don’t exist, then who am I?  Oh it all comes back to me now…Who am I, why am I here and all those wonderful existential questions we...

Invisible

Apr 26, 2011 by

“Old age takes everyone by surprise, and no one really ever comes to terms with it.” That’s what Jill Lepore writes in THE NEW YORKER’s March 14th article on aging “Twilight.” Lepore is referring to the thinking of G. Stanley Hall.  Ahead of his time, Hall was looking at aging from all kinds of angles in the early 20th century.  Back then, aging was still a novelty. Most people didn’t live long enough to experience it. Today, as the first wave of the 76 million Baby Boomers hits 65 years old, aging has become embedded in society.  Of course, as Hall observed, it does take us by surprise.  Since most of my dysfunctional family dies young, I never anticipated being around much after 50.  Yet, here I am.  And unlike what Hall says, many...

Say It Loud: I’m a Nerd and I’m Proud...

Mar 29, 2011 by

Hi, I’m JaneA, and I’m a completely unapologetic nerd. I embody pretty much every one the hallmarks of classic nerditude: I read science fiction and fantasy novels, I play Dungeons & Dragons, I can recite entire Monty Python skits from memory, I love cats more than I love most people, and I spend entirely too many hours in front of a computer. When I look back, I see that I’ve been a nerd since my earliest days. I was reading when I was three years old. In school I liked class time better than recess because I just loved to learn. I spent my summer vacations reading books by the dozens, I was crazy about superheroes, and I preferred Legos and Lincoln Logs to Barbies and princess outfits. I created my first computer animation,...

“You” As A Digital Brand...

Mar 23, 2011 by

Recently I was re organizing my home office. Er .. ok, I was moving piles of papers to make my desk seem less cluttered. I came across an article that someone had sent me in 1997.. don’t even ask Girlfriend! I don’t remember who sent it to but I saved it because at the time the concept intrigued me. It was Tom Peter’s The Brand Called You which you can find at Fast Company online. As the fates, would have it soon after reading it I was “right-sized” or “down-sized” or whatever the politically correct term was at the time. I was fired from my  job with the Georgia Lottery Company. Peter’s idea that a company would want to hire “more than a resume” was radical 14 years ago. He talked about managing our...

I Want Annette Bening’s Hair (She can keep Warren Beatty)...

Mar 16, 2011 by

And I’ve tried…and tried…and tried.  I’ve finally had the startling epiphany (after attempt #48 or so) that I’ll never have her hair – because I don’t have her head (including that gorgeous 53-year-old happy kitten face). Well, duh, Mary. How often have even the most independent, self-confident of us tried to look like or be something we’re not?  Let’s pause here for a second in not-so-loving memory of the ubiquitous “Rachels” back in the day…’K. moving on. I didn’t have the ‘do. I thought it was quite sufficient for Jennifer Anniston to run around in the thing (followed by herd of hairdressers to keep the coif)…and she was recently quoted that it was “the ugliest haircut I’ve ever seen.” Then there’s the depressing I’m supposed to look/be/do _____________. I’m convinced that this “supposed to”...

Dating By The Time You’re 40+ Part 2...

Mar 10, 2011 by

Let’s be real. Dating at 40+ is different, and the same time, it’s pretty much as it was when we were in our 20’s. The difference now is that we (and he)  just might have a better idea of what we want .. or not. If you missed Part 1 (#1 It’s not all their fault and #2 Get happy with your life and with yourself) check it out and come back. 3.  GET HONEST WITH YOURSELF ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT RIGHT NOW. Stop thinking about what it’s going to be like when you meet his bratty seven-year-old.   Don’t think long-term or long haul—because if you haven’t got to the first drink, you certainly aren’t going to meet the kid.  Take a step back from all those anxiety-causing thoughts of how miserable you might...
