A Perfect Spring Evening

Apr 13, 2012 by

Last year when Diva Toby was home for a Massachusetts visit, we spent a lovely evening with her cousin Kaye Ellen enjoying conversation, good food and a new cocktail. It was a beautiful evening that was made extra special since one of our favorite restaurants overlooks the water. The waitress at Not Your Average Joe’s in Norwell, MA was nice enough to share the recipe for Watermelon Cocktails.  Since we are having an extremely early spring,  it seemed like  it might be time to get out the pitcher and make up a batch!! Watermelon Martini Ingredients 8 pumps of watermelon Monin 4 oz cranberry juice 6 oz  Triple 8 Cranberry Vodka 6 oz Triple Sec 12 oz Stirrings watermelon juice Champagne (or any sparkling wine) Directions In a large pitcher combine all ingredients adding as...

And Now A Word From The Fashion Police …...

Apr 2, 2012 by

Spring has come early to Boston! Actually it was more like summer last week with temperatures above 80. With this gift from Mother Nature came the flip side of a warm day…fashion faux pas everywhere I looked. I am by no means a style expert, some of my favorite outfits are too old to even admit! No one has ever mistaken me for a fashion expert BUT some things must obviously be pointed out because it seems many people this week went out without the benefit of common sense…or a mirror! For  Girlfriends … Just because the belly shirt is your size doesn’t mean everyone should wear one. If your belly sticks out further than your breasts…cover it up! If your belly covers your waistband when you stand up( or for that matter if you’re seated)...

Cereal Isn’t Just For Breakfast Anymore – Part Two...

Mar 23, 2012 by

Loved reading Toby’s post about the use of cereal for more than breakfast-and late night munchies! Here’s another recipe that has long been a favorite in my family…using Rice Krispies. We used to just make these at Christmas but finally my nephew pointed out they weren’t really a holiday specific treat and now he feels free to request them year round:-)) Peanut Butter Bonbons Ingredients 1 stick butter 2 cups peanut butter 3 cups Rice Krispies 1 lb confectioners sugar (roughly 3 cups) 1 12oz pkg chocolate chips Directions In a double boiler melt butter and peanut butter together, stir often til smooth Mix cereal and sugar together Pour butter/PB mixture over dry ingredients, mix thoroughly Using a teaspoon, make 1″ balls, place on wax paper covered platter Chill 2-3 hours When firm, melt...

Dancing With The Stars ~ Mystery Music Week...

Nov 13, 2011 by

We’re getting close to the end of this season. This week on Dancing With The Stars the performers needed to do two dances. One of their own choosing, the other an “Instant Jive”. They all get time to practice the rudimentary steps of this dance; the gimmick is that the dancers have no idea what song they’ll be “jiving” to! If you’ve followed all my updates you’re either amused, interested or sick to death of me telling you about how much I want JR Martinez to win this contest! Obviously the judges are starting to agree with me. He did a wonderful waltz, lyrical and graceful-got a perfect 30. Then his jive rocked the ballroom- another 30!  He is a fabulous entertainer and the joy on his face as he performs is infectious. It’s...

Dancing With The Stars ~ Halloween...

Nov 5, 2011 by

Once again girlfriends, if you weren’t watching Dancing With The Stars you missed a strange week. We’re down to 6 pairs The dancers were all in Halloween themed costumes, but some of the music just didn’t match the outfit or the dance. As you can see, I’m now considering myself an expert My favorite JR Martinez did a great tango, his style is so smooth. Judges weren’t crazy about it-said it was his own fault; he has been doing so well that they expect more from him. Ricki Lake blathered on about a rib injury then did a very energetic Paso. I know, I know. She’s good…blahblahblah. Still don’t like her. Nancy Grace looked like something out of a Tim Burton version of Willy Wonka. I wish I could explain what she was supposed...

Dancing With The Stars ~ Broadway Week...

Oct 29, 2011 by

OK girlfriends, even if you aren’t watching Dancing With The Stars and have no interest in these posts…what a week you have missed! Seriously you would have to be living under a rock to have missed all the brouhaha this week’s episode created. Today, GMA, CNN, HLN etc have all been covering the antics of these hard bodies and their “star” partners. Love Broadway tunes. Used to sing the music of Phantom to make my niece fall asleep; so was psyched for this week. By the end of two hours…dancing was incidental. First off let me just say my favorite JR Martinez did an amazing job to the theme from Chicago. Rob and David both did well. The annoying Ricki Lake was great. And then the drama started! Nancy Grace looked like some kind...

Dancing With The Stars ~ Eighties Week...

Oct 20, 2011 by

Well girlfriends, as women of a certain age we all remember the 80’s. While we were all probably fabulous it is important to remember it was NOT a good time for fashion. What were we thinking??? This week on Dancing with the Stars, it was a sequined polyester, big shouldered celebration of all things 80’s. Funny how I could remember the words to just about all the songs! It’s the halfway point in the competition and the performers are either “getting it” or just there cuz they have a big fan base voting for them. My favorite JR Martinez won the week doing an amazing samba. The man can move! Got great marks and rave reviews. Rob Kardashian is actually getting pretty good. Did a sexy rumba that surprised the judges and earned him...

Dancing With The Stars ~ Movie Theme Night...

Oct 11, 2011 by

OK, I’m sure after my way too long intro to Dancing With The Stars you all couldn’t wait to tune in this week. If you missed it, most of the night can be summed up in one word…CHER!!!! The dancers all had to choose a “great” movie theme. Some of them weren’t even songs! Ricki Lake did a killer (pun intended) tango to the theme from PSYCHO. Did you even know there was a theme? I only knew those staccato noises that you think of when she’s getting stabbed in  the shower. So Ricki. Well as much as I don’t like her she was great. She’s safe. David Arquette did a great Paso to the theme from Indiana Jones-complete with whip. He’s safe. This guy seems pretty goofy but he can dance!  And of course...

Dancing With The Stars ~ Most Memorable Year...

Oct 4, 2011 by

OK, admit it, you have a guilty pleasure! One of mine started 2 years ago when a group of friends got me hooked on Dancing with the Stars. Started out just a couple of us, now we are 20 and growing in our own little locked Facebook group. Some nights we generate more than 400 comments. We feel free to critique the stars, their bodies, their skill-or lack thereof. We diss costumes, spray tans, bad musical arrangements  and choreography. Some of us even vote! For those of you out of the reality closet, here are some of my thoughts on the season so far. I’d love to hear what you think! This week’s  theme was most memorable year. We got some sob stories, some pitiful attempts for sympathy votes and one story that actually...

Summer Strawberry Trifle

Aug 12, 2011 by

This past weekend I was once again invited to a family reunion-with the amazing Diva Toby’s family. It’s funny isn’t it, how “family” has nothing to do with bloodlines. I choose to think of it as a family of the heart…and I have been fortunate to know and love this family for (gulp!) forty years. It was a beautiful August afternoon/evening down at the beach, at the home of Toby’s cousin (and a Diva in her own right) Kaye Ellen. Family came from far and near, excellent food and the ‘Tinis were flowing! So anyway, I’ve known about this party since late January, certainly long enough to have a plan for my assigned dessert. Sadly, on Friday night I started thinking “What should I bring?” Like most of us of a certain age, I...

Lemon: An Alternative To Chocolate Desserts!...

Jul 15, 2011 by

OK, I know it’s a sacrilege to say this… I’m not crazy about chocolate. One of the few things I never crave. Go figure. So, I’m always on the lookout for something quick, easy and non-chocolate. This is a great recipe, goes together in minutes and you can bring it, serve it or just snack on it at home … all by yourself. Just for fun, I’m including  3 different toppings-something for everyone!   Lemon Brownies Ingredients 1 cup softened butter (2 sticks) 4 eggs 2 cups sugar 11/2 cups all purpose flour 1 tsp salt 2 tsp lemon extract 1 tbsp lemon zest Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees Grease 13X9X2 pan. Beat together butter, sugar and eggs. Gradually add flour and salt. Add juice and zest. Mix til smooth. Pour into prepared pan...

It’s Raining Men

Jun 17, 2011 by

It’s Father’s Day , the time of year when we celebrate our Dads. Saw a card in the store the other day, Said something like…”Want to know why Father’s Day is in June? A bunch of dads were sitting around about a month after Mother’s Day and said Hey! What about us!!” Hallmark outsells Mothers Day cards 9:1 over Fathers Day. According to all the ads, every man alive wants a big screen TV or power tools (OK, a few fashion conscious men want golf shirts and madras shorts) If you believe Madison Ave, every man will be grilling something this coming Sunday, usually huge hunks of beef. Seems a bit limited and stereotypical to me. Fathers should be every bit as celebrated as Moms! I’m lucky to still have my Dad. He’s an...
