Celebrating Mother’s Day .. Mama Says!...

May 13, 2012 by

When I stopped seeing my mother with the eyes of a child, I saw the woman who helped me give birth to myself. ~ Nancy Friday Sometimes you buy the perfect dress for a special event that you know you’ll probably not wear again. This is a “classic” All The Single Girlfriends post that was created for Mother’s Day 2011. We loved it so much that we wanted to take it out of our closet and wear it again. Hope you enjoy! At our heart, All The Single Girlfriends is about women connecting with women. So of course, to dedicate a series of Mother’s Day posts was a natural for us. As with all our girlfriend-to-girlfriend conversations, our Mother’s Day posts reflect the diversity of who we are and how our mothers’ have influenced...

Changing Lives: One Apple At A Time...

Feb 17, 2012 by

Today’s Foodie Friday takes a different focus.  Have you ever heard of a “food desert?” I hadn’t until a few weeks ago when my girlfriend Deborah and I saw the documentary film  The Apple Pushers at the  Atlanta Jewish Film Festival. I walked into the theatre expecting to see a movie about food carts in New York. I walked out with an appreciation of how a small “green cart” can change people’s lives. I also left with the a greater understanding that knowledge alone will not right obesity. Nor will information on how to eat healthy lead to nutritious food choices. Oh sure it’s important to know about the food groups or the new “food plate.” However, easy and affordable access to fruits and vegetables is often the critical missing link.  As I munch on an apple while...

Thanksgiving Traditions Differ

Nov 23, 2011 by

Thanksgiving means different things to each of us. For some girlfriends it’s a special dish that brings back childhood memories. For others it’s the people sitting around the table. All The Single Girlfriend authors share What makes Thanksgiving “Thanksgiving” for us. For some Gf the holiday is a melancholy time. For some it’s a time of new beginnings. Over the next days we’ll share our experiences and memories with you. Please join the conversation and let us know what are some of your Thanksgiving traditions. Thanksgiving means being with the people I love, eating whatever version of the foods I love show up. I am not a stickler for how it used to be but I honor the past while creating traditions that start in the present.  This year: cutting the turkey up first before...

atsGf A Pithy Book Review

Jul 14, 2011 by

atsGf A Pithy Book Review is the idea of Gf Dorothéa Bozicolona-Volpe who suggested we supplement traditional book reviews with ones that are 2 lines and a strong opinion. Hope you enjoy! Dorothéa Bozicolona-Volpe – This book is incredibly insightful and very well researched. The contributors and content that Ms. De Paulo has woven together in such an astute fashion makes this a good read for both men and women. It should be distributed by every single person that has been discriminated against in the workplace, advertisers, financial institutions, amongst married/ coupled-off friends, and society as a whole. Marianne Richmond –  Bella DePaulo’s book is based upon the definition of singlism as a social concept; “negative stereotypes and discrimination faced by singles.” She and her co-authors find this marginalization of and discrimination against single women in all...

Pappadoo For Me

Jun 20, 2011 by

I spent Father’s Day with my mostly-single girl friends on Martha’s Vineyard … and my dad was there with mom too – down the street – so we were able to celebrate Father’s Day with a breakfast together, all seven of us.   I am not sure the last time I was with Dad on Father’s Day but when I see him, aging quite well, I’m only reminded of how smart, funny, complex, and engaging he is. One of my girl friends noted that he is an “idealist”. Another noted that the loves to “politically confront – all the time”.  Both are quite true. A flag-waving Democrat, he has always fought for the underdog in life, and what I’ve learned is that at throughout life, everyone has his or her being or championing the...

Celebrating Our Dads

Jun 19, 2011 by

As diverse as every girlfriend is, her relationship with the first man in her life is as unique. The Gf authors are no different when it comes to our fathers. After our Mother’s Day Series we had a special request from Bonnie’s dad. How could we say no?!  We hope you enjoy the video and stories and memories about our dads because as Polli put it … Fathers should be every bit as celebrated as...
