White Trash ‘Toonis

Oct 7, 2011 by

Recently a friend was coming over for Friday martinis. (Everyone knows they can invite themselves over pretty much any Friday. There will be ‘toonis.) I decided to do something a little different so I got out my smaller Kerr jars and made individual drinks. Fun to look at; easy to make. You simply pour vodka over ice (and if you simply must, add a drop or three of dry vermouth). Screw on the lid, shake vigorously. Then, keep in freezer until company arrives. To serve, thread a fresh cherry tomato, a pickled okra pod and a pickled green tomato on a cocktail pick. Wrap a paper towel around the base of the jar with a rubber band, for that extra special touch. On the side, you can offer pimento cheese on saltines (Hey, if...

I Think Better When I Walk

Oct 5, 2011 by

I’m not sure why this happens but whenever I walk the dogs, my brain works in amazing ways! It seems to be buzzing at warp speed –  the conversations I have with myself are often better than conversations I have with other people! Don’t tell anyone I said that, though. Mind you, I’m not saving the world, or ending hunger or even choosing the next president. My thoughts...

Dancing With The Stars ~ Most Memorable Year...

Oct 4, 2011 by

OK, admit it, you have a guilty pleasure! One of mine started 2 years ago when a group of friends got me hooked on Dancing with the Stars. Started out just a couple of us, now we are 20 and growing in our own little locked Facebook group. Some nights we generate more than 400 comments. We feel free to critique the stars, their bodies, their skill-or lack thereof. We diss costumes, spray tans, bad musical arrangements  and choreography. Some of us even vote! For those of you out of the reality closet, here are some of my thoughts on the season so far. I’d love to hear what you think! This week’s  theme was most memorable year. We got some sob stories, some pitiful attempts for sympathy votes and one story that actually...

I’m Sorry. Please Forgive Me....

Oct 3, 2011 by

The Jewish High Holidays kicked off with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, on Wednesday, September 28 and continues until Yom Kippur – the Day of Atonement – on October 8.  The ten day span between those two events is often called the Days of Awe. It is time when we are asked to reflect on the past year and the ways we have ‘missed the mark,’ the literal translation for the Hebrew word often translated as ‘sin.’ Part of that work is to ask for forgiveness from others for ways we might have caused distress or pain or created distance and misunderstanding. We are told that we can work out our relationship with God through prayer, with ourselves in a variety of personal ways, yet when it comes to clearing what has happened...
