Pappadoo For Me
Happy Father's Day!
I spent Father’s Day with my mostly-single girl friends on Martha’s Vineyard … and my dad was there with mom too – down the street – so we were able to celebrate Father’s Day with a breakfast together, all seven of us. I am not sure the last time I was with Dad on Father’s Day but when I see him, aging quite well, I’m only reminded of how smart, funny, complex, and engaging he is.
One of my girl friends noted that he is an “idealist”. Another noted that the loves to “politically confront – all the time”. Both are quite true. A flag-waving Democrat, he has always fought for the underdog in life, and what I’ve learned is that at throughout life, everyone has his or her being or championing the underdog, the voices of the little heard or invisible.
One of my friends, a successful business women, told him she loved his brain – after we had an evening of political discourse. Unexpectedly, he replied, “You mean you don’t love my body?” Gulp. He is very funny, though you never know when the humor will give you a reason to lose your breath.
My dad and I have a loving way of saying “I’m here. I love you.” Taken from Frank Sinatra’s song, I call my dad “Pappadoo” when I first see him in the morning at breakfast and peppered throughout the day. For me, my dad is so much more than my hero and I have a lump in my throat when I really start to think about him and all he has encouraged me to do and be. With five adult children, and seven grandchildren, he continues his legacy of championing the underdog.
The irony is .. he often thinks of himself as the underdog … and therein lies the complexity of Pappadoo. I love you Dad!
Kelley – Love how childhood names and games continue into adulthood creating special traditions .. like calling a dad Pappadoo 🙂
